#JMKSpace: Exploring your own creative voice and your personal politics with Emma Callendar
How can we explore what kind of artist we are? Or what kind of artist we want to be? How can we put our ideas or politics into action so we actually walk the walk rather than just talking the talk? How do we set up the dynamic of our rehearsal room? How do we choose the stories we want to tell on stage? What questions or ideas do we want to challenge our audience with? How can we make the change we want to see through the work that we make, no matter how big or small? This session will look at how you can explore your own unique perspective as a director and manifest those ideas into action both in your process and your productions.
The session will take place 6:00 – 8:00pm on Thursday 1st July on Zoom.

Emma Callander is an award winning theatre director, dramaturg and producer. She is dedicated to creating experiences that challenge inequality. As Co-Artistic Director of Theatre Uncut she commissions and directs political new writing for both live and digital audiences including work by Caryl Churchill, Inua Ellams, Mark Ravenhill and Sabrina Mahfouz. Her production of The Merthyr Stigmatist by Lisa Parry is streaming at the Sherman Theatre until 26th June 2021. The digital production of Bubble by Kieran Hurley was viewed by over 200,000 people. Her work has won the Amnesty International’s Freedom of Expression award, three Scotsman Fringe First awards, a Herald Angel award and the Spirit of the Fringe. Emma was Resident Director at the National Theatre of Scotland through the Regional Theatre Young Directors Scheme 2009-10 and a finalist of the JMK award in 2008. She was Associate Director of the Traverse Theatre 2013-15, Creative Director of the Birth International Playwriting Festival at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester in 2015 and a Leverhulme Scholar at the Bristol Old Vic in 2019. Emma also hosts public talks, most recently at the Speakers Corner stage at Boomtown Fair and the Information stage at the Downs festival including live Q&A’s with Ken Loach, Elizabeth Uviebinené and Darren McGarvey. www.theatreuncut.com www.emmacallander.com
